Book Release for Cracked: The Future of Dams in a Hot, Chaotic World

May 9, 2023 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

Author and activist Steven Hawley will debut his just-released book “Cracked: The Future of Dams in a Hot, Chaotic World” at the 1912 Center’s Lecompte Auditorium at 7pm on May 9th. This event is free and open to the public.

Hawley will discuss his book and the truths it reveals about last century’s indulgence in dam building and its legacy. He will also reflect upon how the book’s message relates to the ongoing debate about the lower Snake River dams. A Q & A will follow.

Hawley is best known as the writer and co-producer of the award-winning film “Dammed to Extinction,” which documented the plight of the Salish Sea’s endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. Publisher Patagonia Press will release Steve’s new book on May 2nd. The book features a forward by Montana author of “The River Why,” and “The Brothers K”, David James Duncan.

From the book jacket: Cracked: The Future of Dams in a Hot, Chaotic World is a kind of speed date with the history of water control — its dams, diversions and canals, and just as importantly, the politics and power that evolved with them.” Hawley devotes two chapters to the dams on the lower Snake River. He also addresses the current water crisis on the Colorado, as well as dams outside the western United States.

This event is sponsored by the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute.
