Build BDAs with our Restoration Crew!

Our restoration team has a BIG project to complete before the weather turns. We will be installing 38 beaver dam analogs (BDAs) at one of our local restoration sites—wow! Join us the next two Saturdays, November 11th and November 18th, from 9am-noon to help get them installed. It’s helpful to know how many people are coming, so if you’re able to, please visit our Give Pulse site (linked in the dates above) to register or learn more about these events. What exactly are BDAs? Read on for what former PCEI AmeriCorps member Bryce shared about his work in this area: BDAs are designed to mimic dams that beavers create naturally, and they work to slow down fast-moving water, flood low areas for a greater duration of the year, and filter out sediment. Over time, BDAs can help restore degraded steam channels. Beavers and dams have always been an important and integral part of wetland ecosystems in North America. Due to unsustainable trapping practices and removal of desirable trees for farmland and development, beavers occupy only a small area of the western US that they once did. By creating BDAs, we’re able to mimic many of these essential services that beavers provide to the ecosystem. Our goal is to create favorable conditions for beavers to return.
