Styner Avenue Riparian Planting

StynerAfterWatershed: Palouse Basin
Stream Name: Paradise Creek
Date Established: 04/01/2002
Project Status: Complete, Ongoing monitoring and maintenance

Description

Willow poles were planted along the streambank for erosion control and to provide shade to lower water temperatures. Native shrubs such as snowberry, aspen, and serviceberry were planted to establish a riparian buffer. Girl scouts and elementary school students did much of the planting. Ponderosa Pine donated by Potlatch Corporation were also planted.

Previous Conditions

This stretch of the creek had been routinely dredged by the city, and the dredge spoils dumped on the streambank. Consequently, the stream channel is excessively wide and uniform, with steep, very high banks. Reedcanary grass, Canada thistle, and prickly lettuce were the only vegetation on the streambanks.
